Collecting from the inside and from the outside
The workshop explores walking as a medium of imagination, exchange and change, communication and creation. On walks Zeyno Pekünlü and Sylvi Kretzschmar will share thoughts about stumbling and stagnation in their work as artists and activists. Is failure mourned in political movements? What keeps us moving? The students are invited to walk and talk about their own experiences between failure and hope. Building on this, we use walking as a method to collect impressions and ideas, field recordings, material for sound collages, voices, texts, maybe even poems, songs and speeches. While Zeyno Pükünlü will focus on the expression of opportunities the repurposing and remixing of words, sentences and texts that we could collect through the working exercise could provide, Sylvi Kretschmar will introduce walking as a source of sound and music. Equipped with recording devices, microphones and headphones, participants will do field recordings, turn found objects into musical instruments and experiment with sound and voices in different architectures and surroundings. Both approaches will culminate in a walking presentation in which portable speakers, megaphones, text banners, flags and found objects will be moved in a DeMonstration of failure and hope. We invite our audience to walk with us. The results of the workshop will be also presented at the Summerfest of the Zeppelin University at the 16th of Speptember.

Zeyno Pekünlü is an artist living and working in Istanbul. Scanning a range of issues, from the construction of maleness and femaleness as gender roles to questioning knowledge and its distribution, Zeyno’s works aim to decipher “power” that encompasses the intimate and the social simultaneously. Her works invert the social functions of found materials, specifically texts and images through deformation, contextual detachment and categorization of the ordinary.

Sylvi Kretzschmar (Vienna/ Hamburg) works in the fields of performance, (electronic) live music and artistic activism. Solo, with the duo SKILLS and as part of the activist and band collectives SCHWABINGGRAD BALLETT and SIRENEN, she developed hybrid formats between live art and concert, in which composition and choreography merge. Her work with megaphone choirs is one facet of her artistic research on voice amplification in political assemblies and demonstrations.

Modulbeschreibung:
How do new forms of living together emerge? The module focuses on the question of how one can gain unfamiliar perspectives on the familiar, in order to allow for the new and the different to emerge into our world. Together with artists you will test experimental and performative possibilities of aesthetic and artistic forms of knowledge, become creatively active and get to know new techniques of observation, improvisation and imagination. In this way, you will become familiar with forms of world appropriation that derive from practical, creative action and unfold in the work with your own body and senses. Within the module, different creative and artistic modes of knowledge production are offered and combined with each other. These range from drawing, photographic and filmic modes to performative and ritual self-techniques. The different workshops will be structured by the preparation of a final public presentation.
