Inhalte: Contents The contents include an overview of experimental methods in social sciences relative to other research methods, upsides and downsides of experiments, historical examples; the design of research questions and hypotheses; the translation of theory into experiments; methods of experimental control (e.g., manipulation and randomization); design features (e.g., factorial designs, within-subjects versus between-subjects experiments); visualization and interpretation of experimental outcomes (e.g., comparison of means, main effects, and interaction effects); how to read research articles reporting experiments efficiently. The course combines lectures with in-class and take-home exercises and student presentations. Students are strongly encouraged to participate actively and engage in learning activities.
Lernziele: Learning objectives The purpose of this course within the module is to equip students with methodological skills to realize their Zeppelin Projects. Beyond the project, it has the following learning objectives. Knowledge: Students understand the potential of experiments for research in social sciences along with the pros and cons of the method. They know about canonical experiments. Competences: Students are familiar with design features of experiments. They can conceive experiments to address research questions and evaluate whether a research question lends itself for an experiment. Skills: Students can design and conduct simple experiments (e.g., vignette studies for surveys). They can interpret experimental results and read literature reporting experiments.
Weitere Informationen zu den Prüfungsleistungen: The exam is covered by the group research project report and presentation concluding the Zeppelin Project. Attendance is expected.
Literatur: Reading materials include book chapters, research articles, and online resources, which will be provided in class.
