Contents
The contents include data collection (sampling, sampling error, issues with real-world data), data types (measurement level), and basic terminology (variable, observation, parameter, etc.); exploratory data analysis (e.g., distributions, simple summary statistics, outliers, correlations, and data visualization); inference using parametric tests (e.g., t-test, linear regression, and ANOVA), and non-parametric tests (e.g., rank-sum, signed-rank, and ?² tests for two-way tables). Alongside, R and RStudio are briefly introduced at the beginning and subsequently used for data processing and analysis in examples and exercises throughout the course.
The course combines lectures with in-class and take-home exercises and student presentations. Students are strongly encouraged to participate actively and engage in learning activities.
Lernziele:
Learning objectives
The purpose of this course within the module is to equip students with statistical skills to help them realize their Zeppelin Projects. Beyond the project, it has the following learning objectives.
Knowledge: Students understand the importance of quantitative research in social sciences. They have an overview of statistical analysis and are familiar with specific statistical tests.
Competences: Students can interpret statistics, both academic and non-academic (e.g., polls). In particular, they can read results sections in research articles. They can analyze their own data and communicate their results.
Skills: Students can process (e.g., import and transform) and analyze data in R. They can summarize and visualize their data. They can run simple statistical tests on their data.
