Inhalte: The seminar offers an introduction to the politics and society of modern Taiwan (officially the Republic of China). It deals with the political system and domestic politics on the one hand and cross-strait relations on the other hand. The political system of Taiwan is a semi-presidential system with a history dating back to 1912. The focus of the seminar will be on Taiwan's political development since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 and the democratization in the 1990s. The question of Taiwan's identity and statehood, the Taiwanese party system and the human rights situation in Taiwan will also be discussed. In the second part of the seminar, we will discuss the growing tensions between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. In this context, relations with the USA, neighboring Asian countries, the European Union and Germany will also be part of the seminar.
