Course content:
“One is not born a woman, one becomes one” What exactly did Simone de Beauvoir mean? Gender studies is an interdisciplinary research area that considers how individuals become gendered. In this Student Study we mean to focus on the construction of gender today and its connection to politics, science, popular culture, biological sex and the capitalist economy. Using classic texts from across the various ‘waves’ of feminism, we assess the way in which gender is ‘done’ and ask can it be ‘undone’?
LANGUAGE: the seminar will be held mainly in English but this depends upon the lecturer. Weeks with Dr. Amanda Machin will be in English, weeks with Guest Lecturers may be in German. The presentation and essay must be in English.
Educational objective:
The Student Study understands itself as an introductory and interdisciplinary seminar on the relevant academic topics within this broad field. By completing this course the students will have read and engaged with some classic texts on gender and feminism, be able to reflect scientifically on gender and understand the differences and conflicts within feminist theory.
Further information about the exams:
Assessment will comprise of two parts: a mid-term presentation and an end-term essay. Students will present on a topic of their choice and following feedback, this draft will be formulated into a final end-term paper. Presentations can be individual or as group. Individual presentations should be no longer than 5 minutes. Group presentations can be slightly longer. The grade will be based on the essay. However, the grade can be improved by your presentation performance.
