Course content:
In times of global interconnectedness, global value-creation and urbanization, questions of transcultural leadership continue to gain in importance. To globally acting organizations, sustainable success is highly dependent on whether they are able to utilize and create transcultural commonalities and opportunities for cooperation – this is what Transcultural Management is all about. A concept relatively new, Transculturality is one of the research topics of the Chair of Institutional Economics at the Leadership Excellence Institute Zeppelin | LEIZ.

Against this backdrop, the course ”Leadership and CSR Management in a Transcultural Context“ aims to provide an arena for discovering new perspectives on Leadership and Corporate Social Responsibility. Applying the concept of Transcultural Management, it tackles questions on the challenges that globally acting organizations face in terms of their value creation, in terms of their CSR activities and CSR communication as well as in terms of their competence and leadership models. Besides a sound introduction to the related theoretical concepts (including a guest lecture on cross-cultural meaning-making and communication by Dr. Regina Kessy, see: https://www.transcultural-caravan.org/to-see-is-not-to-know/), the course offers case studies which put those concepts into practice (including a guest lecture by an external expert with broad experience in the fields of CSR reporting and accounting, to be confirmed). Another highlight of this course, the Transcultural Leadership Summit (8-9 Nov. 2018, for more information: www.transcultural-leadershipsummit.com) with its keynotes, panels and workshops will offer various thematic foci for the participating students to discuss the relevance of the transcultural approach in business and society. Finally, the course presents the current state of research on the measurement of Transcultural Competence, providing the students with topical insights on aspects that might play a role in future HR strategies of globally operating organizations.

The course is structured along the following thematic agenda (preliminary; subject to possible modifications):

  1. Introduction: teaching agreement, outline of the course programme, methodology, portfolio examination mode
  2. The concept of Transculturality – theoretical foundations
  3. Guest lecture by Dr. Regina Kessy: Cross-cultural meaning-making and communication
  4. Organizations and value creation in a global context
  5. The concepts of CSR and Shared Value Creation – theoretical foundations
  6. CSR management, measurement and communication in a transcultural perspective
  7. Guest lecture: CSR communication and accounting in business practice (to be confirmed)
  8. Introduction to selected topics of the Transcultural Leadership Summit
  9. Retrospect: lessons learned from the Transcultural Leadership Summit
  10. Transcultural Competence and Transcultural Leadership I
  11. Transcultural Competence and Transcultural Leadership II
  12. ”Leadership and CSR Management in a Transcultural Context“ – Open points and discussion

Educational objective:
The aim of this course is to provide a learning arena to discover the concept of Transculturality and its implications and potentials for globally acting organizations, especially concerning their CSR Management and Leadership. The corresponding theoretical and conceptual foundations as well as their practical applications (for example by case studies) are presented and discussed in depth.

An important goal of this course is to strengthen the active participation and reflective ability of the students. Applying the examination mode of a portfolio, the course aims to encourage the students to shape their own learning experience according to their personal foci, for example when choosing their case study and Transcultural Leadership Summit workshop topics.

Further information about the exams:
Following the examination mode of a ”portfolio“, participation in the course requires a constant preparation and documentation of weekly ”homework“ (workload approx. 2 hours/week), including a group work on a case study. The participation at the Transcultural Leadership Summit and a written reflection (3-5 pages) on one of the Summit’s workshops are another part of the requirements to pass the course. The ”portfolio“ with all the completed homeworks, case study results and the workshop reflection are to be handed in at the end of the semester. There is no end-term exam and no end-term paper to be written.

Note concerning the participation at the Transcultural Leadership Summit: The students of this course receive free entrance to all the plenary sessions and workshops. However, to attend the “social program” (e.g. Conference Dinner or Coffee, Cake & Culture sessions), a student ticket needs to be purchased.
