Course content:
Research in social sciences is always concerned both with theoretical reasoning and with empirical analysis. Thereby analytical frameworks structure empirical research, while empirical observations alter theoretical concepts. This seminar aims to present, train and discuss epistemological considerations, research strategies and research design. The seminar hereby is oriented to the specific needs of the students and their research projects.
The seminar is both lecture and colloquium. The students’ research projects will be discussed alongside more fundamental aspects of research approaches. Methods needed for specific research will be discussed and trained whenever the lecturer is knowledgeable regarding a concrete method. Together we will pick relevant articles for your research and review their research design and approach.
Educational objective:
The students learn how to intertwine analytical concepts with empirical research strategies. Also the students learn how to develop research questions and an appropriate research design. Further the seminar recapitulates and revises different empirical methods.
Further information about the exams:
The students submit either a critical paper review or a research design (to be discussed together)
