Course content:
This course is centered on the following themes:
- Theories of European integration and the European Union;
- multilevel governance and territorial structuring;
- democracy and the “democratic deficit”.
The EU is commonly treated as a singular, stand-alone case, because no other case of supranational regional integration is available for comparison. We will seek to pull it into the purview of Comparative Politics by treating it as an instance of polity building and thus integrating it into the broader perspective of state formation in Europe.
Educational objective:
The course aims at familiarizing students with the theoretical and empirical themes that constitute the sprawling field of EU and European integration studies.
Further information about the exams:
Course grades will be based on an in-class presentation grade (30 percent) and either a take home final exam or a term paper (70 percent).
