Statistics live!
In this seminar, students will develop and improve their statistical skills. Next to theoretical introduction of statistical procedures, this course's focus is on the application of statistical analyses in the data-analysis software R.
We will work with current social science datasets like the European Social Science Survey, the German Longitudinal Election Study or the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study.
Part of the course will focus on professional comunication of statistical results by producing graphs and tables.
Topics that will be covered are:
- Handling of large datasets
- Recoding of variables
- Producing quality graphics with ggplot2
- Independence testing (t-test, Chi-square test)
- Linear regression
- logistic regression
Moreorver, students elect one topic of advanced statistical methods from:
- factor analysis and structural equation models
- multilevel analysis
- panel models
- social network analysis
Educational objective:
The successful participation in the seminar teaches students to critically approach empirical literatur and there applied methods, independently produce own empirical research papers, and professionally summarise and present results of statistical analyses.
