Course content:
This course offers an introduction to the psychology of judgment and decision making. In the weekly lectures, prominent theories that describe how people make decisions, various factors that can influence those decisions, and shortcuts that can bias the results will be discussed.

Integrating theory and empirical research, the course will introduce students to the fundamentals of decision making with a focus on information search, information usage, and effects of feedback on decision making. Heuristics and biases in decision making will be discussed intensively. The course will cover decision making under uncertainty and how individuals deal with risks, including the effects of learning and expertise on decision making. By taking a closer look at current social psychological research on group decision making, the course also offers insight into how groups reach judgments. Finally, the course will look at the influence of emotions on individual decisions.

This course is tailored for students in economics, political, and social sciences. Judgment and decision making is an interdisciplinary research field; hence, studies from psychology, economics, and behavioral ethics constitute the literature basis.

Educational objective:
Students will get to know current empirical research on judgment and decision making. They will gain a better understanding of the limits of rationality in human decision making, i.e., the concept of bounded rationality.  The course will show when and why individuals are subject to biases and how these biases can be influenced or hindered. In the course of this lecture, students will gain insight into classical decision theories and current empirical research. In this context, they shall also understand how social processes influence individual decision making. This lecture aims to transfer knowledge from different research streams to problems and challenges in the fields of economics, society, and politics.
