Course content:
CONTENT:
This unit introduces students to the theory and method of qualitative research in business. Students will be exposed to methods used within the qualitative paradigm. Students will also develop an understanding of the importance of qualitative research in measuring, examining and understanding issues relevant to social sciences and the contemporary business world. This unit also explores fundamental theories of qualitative research, types of qualitative data and data collection methods, as well as methods of analysing qualitative data. This unit will emphasise critical ethical considerations relevant to applied research in the business sphere.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:
1. Explain the purpose of qualitative research in business studies and social sciences;
2. discuss the theories and paradigms relevant to qualitative research methods;
3. explain the methods of qualitative research relevant to business issues and problems that require investigation;
4. critically evaluate the ethical considerations relevant to applied qualitative research;
5. review qualitative research conducted in Australia and internationally;
6. critically discuss from a qualitative research standpoint;
7. apply the procedures used in qualitative research;
8. apply qualitative data analysis methods;
9. interpret research results and apply them to specific areas of inquiry; and
10. critically evaluate qualitative research methods.

ASSESSMENT
The details of the assessment task will be advised mid-January and also during the first class session. You will be assessed on your comprehension of class discussions held and your applied task will centre around:
• Using a body of knowledge to develop research questions..
• Designing qualitative research with a focus on qualitative data collection methods.
• Applying ethics in qualitative research.
• Deciding on the methods of analysing qualitative data.
• Interpreting and applying qualitative data.
• Critiquing the qualitative research process.
