Course content:
This course builds on the course "Research Design and Methods II", which participants should have passed in the previous semester, and completes the methods training for students in the MA programme. Special focus is given in this context to the analysis of empirical data. Central concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics are discussed, as well as their practical application using statistical software. The presentation and presentation of scientific results and the documentation of research activities that lead to these results is also discussed.

Educational objective:
It is the aim of the course to enable students - at least in principle - to independently conduct data analysis and to critically assess analysis results that they encounter in empirical literature. While it is not possible to provide a complete overview of all current methods of data analysis, it nevertheless is intended to acquaint participants with the basic principles of data analysis and statistical inference.

After successful completion of the course, participants are expected to be able to
- use statistical software on a computer
  - to compute basic descriptive statistics
  - to produce graphical summaries of data
  - estimate linear regression models
- describe the uncertainty to estimates based on samples
- conduct tests of statistical hypotheses and to understand their results for chosen research questions
- document their reseach activities and to present results of these activities according to scientific standards.
