Course content:
Behavioral Business Ethics is an interdisciplinary research stream at the intersection of Psychology, Ethics, and Economics & Finance. Based on an empirical (primarily experimental) approach, this line of research examines how human beings respond to moral-ethical issues in business and finance contexts, and how individual and contextual factors can contribute to the development of unethical practices in organizations.

Examples of questions that are addressed in the course are: Why do people (even good people) engage in unethical behavior, often without being aware of it? How do people justify their own unethical behavior? How do people decide what is right or wrong? Do they rely on reasoning or intuition when making this decision? How do we cope with deviations from our own moral standards? Is ethical behavior associated with the ability to control temptations? And if so, what happens when people are mentally tired and thereby lacking self-control? How does money affect individual behavior?

In this seminar, students will hear introductions into a variety of current topics in Business Ethics and deepen their knowledge by working with scientific papers from international journals. The examination consists of a discussion paper during the semester and a written exam at the end of the semester.

Educational objective:
Students will ...

learn about psychological biases and situational factors that can hinder or foster ethical behavior.
expand their methodological skills by learning more about the experimental approach.
learn to apply findings from research to daily life and applied fields.
