Course content:
Behavioral Ethics is an empirical research field that deals with the genesis of dubious business practices in the financial and economic world. A central theme is the examination of the determinants of "Dishonesty in Business". This will be the focus of the course. In view of the numerous scandals involving companies (e.g. Enron, Volkswagen, Wirecard, Cum-Ex) or individuals (e.g. Berni Madoff), questions about (dis)honesty repeatedly receive a lot of attention.
Dishonesty includes behaviors such as lying, cheating, deceiving, manipulating data, etc. But why do people behave honestly or dishonestly? What are the conditions that promote dishonesty? How can honesty be promoted? There are various attempts to answer this question, from economics, philosophy and psychology. In this course, we will explore these different perspectives, the underlying concepts of human nature, and especially the implications of these different approaches for understanding honesty (and why people behave more honestly or dishonestly), using recent empirical-experimental research studies that will be read weekly.
The examination requirement will consist of a presentation during the semester and a written exam on the course content at the end of the semester. Regular and active participation and thorough reading of the articles is also expected.
Basic knowledge of statistics and experimental methodology is required.
Educational objective:
Students will
- acquire knowledge about important perspectives and determinants of dishonesty.
- become sensitized to psychological and situational factors that influence dishonesty.
- expand methodological knowledge in the field of empirical research.
- learn to apply research findings to their own everyday and practical examples.
Mandatory literature:
Literature: Original literature from international journals. Will be announced at the beginning of the seminar.
