Course content:
The rise of China – a shift in global economy – in the 21st century has exhibited unpresented economic annual growth rates, is one of the largest trade partners globally and has proven to possess a strong bargaining power on the global supply chain. China began to embark on this journey with the economic reform in 1978 resulting in millions of people to be brought out of poverty. Today, after the United States China ranks as the second largest economy in the world paired with the title as the largest population in the world.

This course shall enhance a basic understanding of China as a rising economic power and regional hegemon resulting in opportunities and challenges for the global society. This knowledge shall help comprehend current news and happenings related to China’s economy. In particular the course should convey methodical basics in order to approach such economically complex issues.

This introductory course provides a brief overview of the historical background to the country’s economic and political development, then outline China’s current economic policy through macroeconomic data and analysis, thereby touching upon concepts of the labor market, industry structures and cultural characteristics. A special attention will be put on the recent issues related to the position of China in the global economy (silk road initiative) and world policy (Ukraine War). Furthermore, the course will examine key corporate actors such as Tencent, Alibaba as well as foreign firms entering the Chinese market like Amazon, Daimler etc. Continuously, the course will explore the question what role China as a world economy will play in the future.

Educational objective:
The participants develop analytical and critical competencies to systematically explore the depth of Chinese economic institutions, systems and logic of reform. It involves in particular the development of the ability to understand China’s role on a global scale and analyze macroeconomic records. The lectures and assignments will emphasize class contribution and discussion as well as working in groups on presentations. Additionally, close reading skills on main Chinese economic developments are essential for making us better global citizens and economic actors.
