Course content:
This seminar attempts to initiate the student to the many ways in which emotions structure social action and are shaped by political and economic forces.
After interrogating the definition of emotion, the course attempts to characterize the emotional style of populism, a style that revolves around fear, resentment, nostalgia and love for the nation. The second part of the seminar will offer the notion of emodity, commodities that take the form of emotions and will attempt to understand their circulation in a consumer market. Particular attention will be given to love and positive emotions.
Further information about the exams:
Students will be asked to do a short presentation and to write a short term paper on one of these two aspects of emotions. They will be asked to discuss one emotion based on the empirical analysis of one political emotion or one emodity.
