Course content:
The emotional turn in the study of International Relations will be the inducement of this seminar. We will start by understanding the theoretical concepts of affect, emotion, and emotional politics - and the differences between them. Therefore, we will draw upon sources from sociology, psychology, and political science. This interdisciplinary approach helps us to address the driving questions: How do affects and emotions influence politics, polity, policies, and actors on different levels? How can this complex dynamic process be investigated? And: Which implications follow for science, politics, and society? Discussing current research papers and case studies - e.g. on International Organizations, International Non-Governmental-Organizations, political activism, various international discourses, we try to find topical answers. Here, one emphasis will be on qualitative methodological approaches to research affects and emotions. During the seminar the students will already work on their own research papers. The selection of sub-topics and case studies will be made considering the interests of the students - e.g. migration discourse, climate activism, (social) media, (right wing) populism.

Educational objective:
After this course the participants are able to...

...name, decribe, and reflect upon central theoretical concepts of the research on affects and emotions in political science (especially in International Relations).
...understand and explain the dynamic relations of politics, society, affects, and emotions using empirical examples.
...develop own research projects, to use, and evaluate appropriate methods for researching affective and emotional phenomena.
