Course content:
This seminar deals with European institutions. This does not only comprise the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament or the Council as institutions of the European Union. This also entails the German Bundestag, the Italian Government, or the Polish Constitutional Court, to name just a few examples. This seminar helps students to better understand how these institutions interact in order to influence the contents and dynamics of politics and policies in Europe.

Specifically, the seminar focuses on three areas:

First, we take a look at how key institutions of the EU interact to make EU policies. Second, we discuss how the European Commission, national governments and national administrations interact in order to implement EU policies. Third, we focus on how the Court of Justice of the EU, national Constitutional Courts and subnational Courts interact to uphold and shape EU law. Fourth, we will talk about the interplay between European integration and national party systems.

Educational objective:
Students who successfully participate in the seminar,
| understand the complex interplay between national institutions and institutions of the EU.
| are able to explain how this interplay affects policy contents and political competition within the European multi-level system
| are able to critically reflect the problem-solving capacity of European societies

Further information about the exams:
