Course content:
The leadership of the People's Republic of China under Xi Jinping has not condemned the war of aggression against the Ukraine and describes its own relations with Russia as "rock solid". While economic and political ties are intensifying, the Chinese government is presenting itself as a neutral mediator for a peaceful solution to the conflict, although its commitment is not really convincing. Japan and South Korea have historical tensions with Russia and are close allies of the USA. Both governments quickly condemned the war and sided with the Ukraine and its Western supporters, including by supplying weapons. The Russian attack on the Ukraine is also condemned in Taiwan. Many observers also see parallels between the war in Europe and a possible escalation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait. Tensions seem higher than ever and a possible invasion of Taiwan by the People's Republic is more than ever within the realm of possibility.
Educational objective:
The aim of the seminar is to analyze the motives behind the different reactions in China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. We also want to explore the question: What are the immediate consequences of the Ukraine war, and how do these political and economic consequences of the war affect East Asia?
