Course content:
The course is designed to introduce students into the topic of global supply chain management. No previous knowledge is required. After establishing the basic concepts the lecturer will use several business situations to illustrate the practical applications of the supply chain management theory, discussing with the students its impact on our modern economy. 

The course will be structured in 4 sessions within one blockweek:   

The first session will introduce the concepts of international business and international trade, explaining how and why companies expand their operations abroad. Legal regulations and international institutions promoting global trade as well as trade barriers and their consequences on the global economy will be explained in detail.   

The second session will focus on global sourcing and international contracting. How multinational enterprises organize their supply chains to purchase goods and services abroad as well as ensure legally and logistically a fruitful and efficient business relation with foreign suppliers will be discussed in the class.   

The third session will provide additional details about trade rules that affect the design of global supply chains, giving real life examples of efficient and agile supply chains in the consumer goods industry. Students will analyze those company cases and identify potential solutions to optimize global operations.   

During the fourth session (online) the final exam will take place. The final exam will consist on a case study. Students will have enough time to read and solve it applying the theoretical concepts discussed in class.
 

Educational objective:
At the end of the course students shall be able to:   

- Describe the main drivers, competencies and regulative framework around international business, trade, purchasing and operations.   

- Assess an international purchasing environment and identify improvement opportunities   

- Assess an international supply chain environment and identify improvement opportunities

Further information about the exams:
Only one exam at the last session of the course, consisting on a case study, which will be solved on an individual basis.
