Course content:
For a long time, the experimental research was considered largely impossible and unhelpful in answering central questions in large parts of the social sciences, for example, in political science. Today, however, experimental research designs are part of the common methodological toolkit in many areas of the social sciences.
This seminar focuses specifically on field experiments. Field experiments aim to move beyond the often somewhat artificial framework of laboratory experiments by confronting relevant subjects in their natural environment with as realistic stimuli as possible for the research question. The seminar will include many examples for field experiments from political science and public administration. However, the seminar welcomes students of all disciplines.
Within the scope of the seminar, we will discuss the following topics:
Fundamentals of experimental research designs
Specifics and different types of field experiments
Discussion of concrete examples of relevant field experiments from the literature
Key elements of an experimental research design
Opportunities for simulating a research design using the statistical program R
Educational objective:
Students develop a general understanding for the advantages and disadvantes of different types of field experiments, know the key elements within field experimental research designs and are able to critically reflect on different field experimental research design choices.
Further information about the exams:
Written research design: students design a field experiment suitable to their individual research question and hypothesis.
