Inhalte: This lecture course offers an introductory account of the policy process in modern liberal democracies. Throughout the course we will, first, adopt a comparative perspective and, second, emphasize how closely the study of the policy process is connected to the examination of the nature of power in society and the conditions of democratic government. Having surveyed major conceptual and theoretical approaches to the study of how and why particular policy decisions are reached, we will describe and analyze the current political environment of the making and delivery of public policy by examining the institutions, actors, and policy-instruments involved.
Lernziele: The purposes of this course are a) to provide an introductory treatment of the institutional context of public policy-making and analysis in the modern state, b) to introduce students to the basic conceptual and comparative literature on these topics, c) help you as an individual to develop your critical sense, your analytical skills, and your written and oral communication skills, d) to provide students with an opportunity to discuss the issues at stake in class.
