Inhalte:
International Political Economy (IPE) considers the role that domestic, foreign and international institutions play in the production, distribution, and consumption of scarce resources. At its core, IPE concerns itself with the distribution of wealth, a topic that is intrinsically tied to power.  It has been described as “the reciprocal and dynamic interaction in international relations of the pursuit of power and the pursuit of wealth.”

The purpose of this course is to examine those interactions between power and wealth, the state and the market. We will attempt to identify the “state of the art” within the IPE literature with a focus on recent quantitative and – to a minor extend – qualitative research. The reviewed theories will be applied to important historical and contemporary empirical issues. We will concentrate on core issues such as the impact of an increasingly interdependent world on the nation state or the main drivers of societal development.

Lernziele:
- Use political and economic concepts and theories to analyze phenomena at the intersection of international politics and economy

- Consider normative trade-offs involved in these phenomena

- Understand the challenges faced by states in an era of global economic integration and fragmentation

- Discuss contemporary international economic and political issues in a critical, thoughtful and coherent way
