Over sixty years after the conclusion of the Rome Treaty, EU guidelines and integrative perspectives continue to strongly shape broad sections of our everyday life. A highly complex system, often seen as remote, distant, and bureaucratic, has been established to balance the widespread interests and differing objectives on the European level. This system’s transparency and its democratic structures are repeatedly exposed to fierce criticism, and its long-term functionality is openly called into question.
This course provides an overview of the key actors, structures and processes of European integration and their historical development. Participants will discuss the functionality and dysfunctionality by exploring selected policy areas. Institutions and processes are analyzed with regards to their democratic potentials, their need for reform and their reform capacity.
In addition to the weekly seminars, an supplementary evening lecture in German language on October 25th, 2017, will focus on the spatial architecture of the European institutions in Brussels: Designing Europe - Brussels as a political architecture (Prof. Dr. Britta Hentschel, TU Kaiserslautern). For details, see zu.de/designing-europe.
Furthermore, participants are invited to join an extracurricular evening lecture in German language to reflect the influence of municipalities within EU multilevel governance: Town Hall & Berlaymont - The Role of Local Authorities in the EU Political System (Dr Martin Silzer, Kultusministerium Baden-Württemberg), October 18th, 2017. See more information at zu.de/rathaus-und-berlaymont.
