The class is structured into 5 + 1 blocks. Each block consists of roughly three 90 minute sessions.

In the first block I will give a brief overview of what we are exploring in the class, how the assignments work, what is expected from you, and what you expect from me. Followed by an introduction to "R for Finance", to give you a solid base for understanding the later models and to allow you to excel at the term paper at the end in ways of managing, modeling, and visualizing the respective data.

The second block looks at the underlying structures and processes of a financial market. We try to answers question such as what is a market, what forms of markets do we currently see, how are prices set/found, and how does a modern market work in detail.

Next up, we will look at derivatives and financial options to see their importance, potential effects, and their relation and use in the rest of the economy.

In the fourth block, we will look at how an investor might decide to invest in a portfolio of assets using the CAPM, modern portfolio theory, plus some more advanced methods and evaluate if the theory holds up to reality.

Then we will investigate the effects of mergers and acquisition of firms using the so-called event-study methodology.

Last but not least, we will use our previously built knowledge to look at financial crises and combine it with network theory to find a new perspective of finance and its stability.

Lernziele:
The goal of this class is to give you a more in depths knowledge of the (current) financial system, how it functions in detail, what drives it, and how it interacts with the rest of the economy. Our approach will be academic in a way that we try to understand the market from an empirical perspective and replicate results as best as we can.
