In some countries abortion is a criminal offense, and carries penalties for both the woman and the provider. In others it is permitted, although limited in particular ways. What determines these differences? Intersections of traditions, norms, socioeconomic factors and governance structures affect the options that profoundly affect the lives of citizens. The regulation of abortion is an example of the wide global variation in public policy. In what other ways do social policies and political institutions differ and why do they do so? Why are some countries more unequal than others? How distinct are the rights and responsibilities of citizenship? What makes a state more or less likely to implement environmental policy? And why is attending to such similarities and differences important? It is often impossible to understand, analyse or even notice something, until it is revealed through comparison. Comparison draws attention to what we might otherwise not see. Using the important methodology of comparative politics, this course involves the investigation of crucial components, articulations and institutions of government systems around the world, and the understanding of specificities of inequality, freedom, power and justice.
