Inhalte: Course description The course focuses on understanding the basic outline of Luhmann’s system theory as exemplified by the book Social Systems. The first part of the course will deal with core concepts and terminology, in particular with clarifying the idea of communication, self-reference, operational closure and autopoiesis. The second part of the course will address the problem of complexity, focusing on organized complexity and establishing some relations between complexity and management of social systems. Finally, the third part of the course will introduce the broader concept of systems thinking and look at some applications in law and governance theory.
Lernziele: Learning objectives Expected outcomes of the course are: • The ability to critically analyze and evaluate theoretical texts • The ability to summarize complex texts in a concise way and to document pertinent lessons learnt • The ability to understand problems of theory building in systems theory and to present them by means of literature, discourse and analysis • The ability to understand, evaluate and present concepts and ideas of system theory and systems thinking. • The ability to contribute ideas and questions to theoretical problems of systems theory and systems thinking.
