Inhalte: Political Actors This course will consider the range of institutional theories through a set of common questions such as the definition of an institution, processes of change, and processes of institutionalization. One central question in this analysis of the theories is whether there is enough commonality among the approaches to argue that there is a single institutional approach. In addition to the discussion of theories, the second portion of the course will examine specific public organizations and structures as institutions. This include obvious candidates such as the public bureaucracy and legislatures, as well as less obvious cases of political parties and interest groups. There will also be some discussion of the nature of institutions in the international system. Political Institutions Institutions are the foundation of political life. They are also central to political theory. This course will cover both institutional theory and the nature of the major political institutions. The emphasis will be on how both the theory and the empirical findings contribute to understanding the performance of political systems. Further, there will be some attempt to integrate understandings of individual political behavior with more structural explanations. ACHTUNG!
