Inhalte:
The course is structured around three major themes, i.e. democracy, capitalism and the welfare state, and political culture and historical cleavages. Our universe of cases consists of the post-industrial societies of Western Europe and North America, plus Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. This group is fairly homogeneous insofar as all of its elements are a) wealthy and b) consolidated democracies, which marks their position as rather advantageous compared to other societies.
The course will alter between lecture and seminar formats. During the lecture segments, students are explicitly encouraged to interrupt to ask for clarification or comment on the subject matter. In each course meeting, a 45 minute segment will be reserved for student group presentation.

Lernziele:
The purpose of this course is to give students a systematic introduction into the comparative politics of post-industrial societies.

Weitere Informationen zu den Prüfungsleistungen:
Grades will be computed based on a group presentation grade (30 percent) and a grade for either the final exam or a term paper (70 percent). The group presentation grade will be a group grade. For the final, students are given a choice between a take home final exam and a term paper. The take home final exam will be conducted as an essay exam. Students will have to answer two out of three questions; each essay is expected to be about three pages in length. Term paper topics will have to be discussed and confirmed by the instructor in advance. Term papers are research papers based on literature that exceeds class readings. The usual rules for citations and references apply to both the take home final and the term paper.
