This course is the combination of a leadership-laboratory and a research- and publication-project. The class assumes the role of a department with the task of publishing a series of booklets or a Handbook on “Leadership”. Our perspective on leadership is both from the leader´s (boss) and the employee´s (direct report) point of view. We clarify the contributions the employee has to make to an successful working relationship and we describe the initiatives a boss may take to influence his/her staff. Thereby we gain a 360 degree understanding of the relationship.

The “output and performance requirements” for our virtual department are given by the “Company Triple F” (Friedrichshafener Führungs-Fibel):

• Engage students in research on leadership
• Provide a basic knowledge of leadership practice
• Enable the staff members to deliver the required output of articles as course work

In order to generate the required output of publications the students have to accomplish one of the following three task packages:

• Finalizing the semifinished articles (in German) prepared by the previous class. These articles need to be reviewed, integrated in one paper and polished to perfection. One student would be assigned to each of these five to six jobs.
• Writing new articles (German). The department will discuss the proposals for relevant topics. Three students are assigned for the job of writing one article on the agreed topics.
• For English speaking students there is a special task to write a paper in English. Draft a research program for the next class: Emerging trends in leadership.

The roles of the participants are as follows:

Prof is the department head with the following tasks:

• Communicate the goals of the Company Triple F
• Communicate his understanding of leadership and provide relevant material
• Explain the reward system (course work)
• Organize the activities of the department
• Initiate the creative search for new research topics
• Assign research teams
• Review the performance of each member.

The members of the department (students) have the following tasks:

• Active engagement with the material on leadership presented in the course
• Contribute by the finalization of existing drafts
• Identify promising new topics
• Perform research projects (basically literature reviews)
• Perform the course work by preparing the articles.

-- Organisational note: Appointment at 29th november 2016 is an alternative schedule. --
