Inhalte:
Open Innovation is currently one of the 'hot topics' when it comes to new product, service, process or business model development. It is a fact that firms cannot possess all relevant knowledge in order to constantly come up with new innovations and to successfully launch them on the market. As a result, firms have started to open up their firm boundaries and integrate the knowledge of customers, suppliers, partners and other information sources within their innovation processes. Thus, they cleverly use external resources and knowhow for their own innovations or they strive for collaborative innovations with external partners. Simultaneously, a lot of firms look for multiplication options of their products and services meaning that they intend to launch them in dissimilar markets. Based on selected scientific journal articles, we are going to approach the following questions during the seminar:

How can firms conduct open innovation? Which external information sources should be taken into account? What is the role of innovation networks and social media in the context of open innovation? What is meant by cross-industry innovation, cognitive distance and absorptive capacity? How to integrate the open innovation approach within business models? What is the impact of corporate culture, strategy, R&D structure as well as other organizational capabilities? How to measure the success of open innovation? Is a firm perceived to be more innovative if it applies open innovation?

Lernziele:
Due to the fact that this seminar corresponds to a research seminar, your active participation is required. Based on the selected research articles in the seminar schedule, we will discuss and elaborate on different questions in the context of open innovation.

You will...
- learn in what ways firms use different forms of open innovation (both within large-sized
and within small and medium-sized firms)
- learn how to analyze different peculiarities of a firm's open innovation paradigm
- understand which corporate aspects drive open innovation and which aspects might count as success factors
- discuss success measurement options in the context of open innovation
- experience how to connect theory and practice in innovation management
- learn how to collect and analyze empirical data in order to approach a specific problem/ question in the context of open innovation

Weitere Informationen zu den Prüfungsleistungen:
Presentation (3-4 students)
The group needs to apply open innovation and analyze one company according to its open innovation behavior. The presentation of the case study will be presented and marked in the second last and last course session. The presentation (30 Mins presentation, not more than 15 slides) as well as a handout (version of the presentation with more detailed comments in the notes section of each slide) need to be submitted on the morning of the presentation in electronic (to ellen.enkel@zu.de) and in paper form at the start of the session.

All topics should discuss
- the relevance of the topic in theory and practice
- include a state-of-the-art literature overview (more than the required readings!)
- collect and analyze at least one company that applies open innovation
- analyze the company´s activities with regards to their culture, strategy and industry, and
- critically asses their open innovation concept in the light of theory and
- give recommendations for practice

Criteria and specifications for oral group work Reached score (max. 25 per category)
1. Introduction and literature review:
- Focus on a selected issue
- Selection of additional relevant academic literature and connection of relevant research streams (focus on peer-reviewed academic journal articles) 
2. Discussion and conclusion:
- Clear understanding of the content and background of the article and topic, clear structure of argumentation
- Interpretation based on discussion (e.g. comparison with additional literature) 
3. Creative and insights and novelty value:
- Extent to which you show intellectual depth and a critical assessment with regard to the existing literature
- Extent to which you come up with new and valuable research ideas and approaches (e.g. extension of theory) 
4. Form and presentation style :
- Consistent citing of literature (accuracy and consistency in both text and reference list), time keeping
- Academic writing including correct grammar, punctuation and spelling

Grades according to points:
94-100 = 1,0 84-86 = 2,0 74-76 = 3,0  64-66 = 4,0
90-93 = 1,3 80-83 = 2,3 70-73 = 3,3 60-63 = 4,3
87-89 = 1,7 77-79 = 2,7 67-69 = 3,7 57-59 = 4,7

Literatur:
a) Before each seminar session, you need to carefully read and prepare the selected research articles which are listed in the seminar schedule at the end of this course outline. Please download them by yourself via the ZU databases (Ebsco, JStor, etc.) or via GoogleScholar. The relevant books are available in the ZU library.
