Inhalte:
Course description and course objectives:

Students will
- be introduced to the essential economic models of international trade (deter-minants; specialization patterns; welfare effects);
- acquire an in-depth knowledge of trade policy instruments;
- discuss the economic and political arguments for/against free trade;
- be familiarized with the role and influence of special interest groups, bureau-cracies and international organisations in the process of shaping trade policy at the national, the supranational and the international levels;
- become acquainted with the main elements of  the institutional framework of international trade and the objectives, structure and competences of the most relevant international and supranational organisations;
- discuss select contemporary issues in international trade policy as well as the national trade policies of the world’s largest economies in case studies.

1. Term paper
• Cover sheet (full name, topic, student ID number, course ID, submission deadline)
• Contents
• List of abbreviations
• Text
• References
• Appendices (graphs, tables etc.)
• Length: 3000-4000 words, including all footnotes and references
• Executives summary (in separate file): one page maximum

2. Comment
The comment should provide a critical appraisal of assumptions, methodology and findings of the main paper
•  Length: 800-1000 words
3. Referencing and citing
• All widely used formats are acceptable (Harvard-style etc.)
• Use respectable (= scientific) sources only (Wikipedia is not one of them!)
• Plagiarism will not be tolerated!

4. Submission deadlines
The term paper and the executive summary are due MONDAY, October 10th, 2016. Please submit the file(s) to knorr@uni-speyer.de and to my secretary (sefrin@uni-speyer.de). Extensions will not be granted!

Shortly after the submission deadline for the term paper, I will assign each paper to one commentator. The written comments are due on MONDAY, October 17th, 2016. Extensions will not be granted!
5. Session structure
• Total session time per topic: 90 minutes
o 30-40 minutes: presentation of term paper
o 5-10 minutes: comment on term paper
o 40-45 minutes: general discussion
6. Course grading
• Term paper (including presentation): weight 80%,
• Comment (including presentation): weight 20%;
• Regular attendance is required to pass!
