Inhalte: Social Theory is designed as an introductory course in which students investigate a number of theories regarding society, social ideals, and social interactions. Social concepts to be examined will include community and society. Social ideals to be investigated will include bureaucratic and charismatic forms of “Herrschaften” as well as the impact of religious thinking on economic ethics and economic conduct. Social interactions to be evaluated will include the tension between past and future, authority and rebellion, and the role of culture in politics. The three major social thinkers considered here are Ferdinand Tönnies, Max Weber, and Hannah Arendt. These three represent diverse perspectives about social theory, from different time-frames, from different political values, and from different gender perspectives. As a result, the investigations into their thoughts about social theory should provide the student with a representative and relatively wide-range of perspectives.
