Seminar & Excursion to Venice

The seminar introduces students to curatorial practices and techniques of displaying and will provide an overview of the history of the museum. The course aims to foster a deeper understanding of curatorial practices past and present.

In addition to this rather broad and theoretical introduction, another focus will be on curating larger exhibitions. We will examine projects that aim to create atmospheres and shed light on curatorial strategies in contemporary art.

Therefore, a three-day excursion to the Venice Biennale and expert talks are an obligatory part of the course. The departure to Venice will be on October 24th, 20:35h from Friedrichshafen by bus or by (night) train at 19:55h from Bregenz. The return journey by train is on Sunday afternoon 27 October 15:35h from Venice, arriving in Bregenz 23.17h or by bus 17:55h from Venice arriving in Friedrichshafen Monday 9:00h.

The number of participants is limited to 20.

The cost per student is between 94-160 Euro - depending on whether you travel by FlixBus or by train (couchette car). This sum includes travel, accommodation and admission to the exhibition.

Registration is first come first serve.

A basic knowledge of art history is required.

++ ADVICE ++

This seminar is very closely aligned to Ulrike Shepherd's practical part of the module. It is therefore highly recommended for ZU students to take the whole module and to choose 121182 | 241182 Curatorial Practice as well. In this part of the module, the participants will curate a program accompanying the exhibition of Pierre Bourdieu's photographs. This part of the module will be held in German.
For international students it is also possible to take only the theoretical course.

Lernziele:
Students become familiar with the various approaches, theories, and techniques of staging and curating.

Weitere Informationen zu den Prüfungsleistungen:
The exam consists of two parts. The midterm part consists of a presentation in class. And for the second part students are to write a critical exhibition review (for incoming students) or a paper of a curatorial concept which should also consider theoretical thoughts discussed in class (max. 5 pages).
