Drama, drama: Cultural history as a history of theatre

Friedrich Schiller famously claimed that the stage was "the boards that mean the world", Shakespeare named the theatre he was shareholder of "the Globe". Since the beginning of European literature drama has understood itself as a reflection of "the world": contemporary society, human behaviour, politics, ideas surrounding the family and morals.
In this class we will look at dramatic texts from various periods of cultural history as witnesses to (and reflexions of) the questions and problems that shaped the time of their writing – we will use them, as it were, as a prism to get a glimpse of the culture of their respective historical periods: Greek and Roman antiquity, the "middle ages", Italian and English Renaissance, Enlightenment, Modernity and Postmodernity.

But it is not only the dramtic texts themselves that make the theatre an interesting 'window' into different cultural historical periods – the way they where performed, and the places where performanced took place also offer a host of clues regarding different historical 'cultures': Looking at the different ways in which  theatres were built, where they placed the audience in relation to the stage (and wether there was a stage at all), who was allowed to act (and who was not), who was allowed to watch, and which (political and/or religious) regulations the theatre was subject to also allows for a detailed view into a culture's assumtions around human perception, the human body and knowledge.
Thus, we will place the texts closely within their traditions of performance, we will look at theatre buildings, stage designs, acting manuals, poetical treatises and – obviously – one or the other theatrical scandal.

The reading material for this class will be uploaded on Zu|Hause; the dramatic texts will be discussed based on an English edition. However, students are invited to consult versions in the lanague they feel most comfortable in if this enhances their understanding.
