123241-44 | L Advanced Methods | L | Introduction to numerical simulation for trade theory and policy using GAMS

Veranstaltungsdetails

Lehrende: Prof. Dr. Richard Frensch

Veranstaltungsart: Seminar / Übung

Orga-Einheit: Corporate Management & Economics

Anzeige im Stundenplan: Advanced Methods | L

Semesterwochenstunden: 2

Credits: 3,0

Standort: Campus der Zeppelin Universität

Unterrichtssprache: Englisch

Min. | Max. Teilnehmerzahl: 10 | 30

Prioritätsschema: Standard-Priorisierung

Inhalte:

  • Consumption, production and trade using NLP;
  • Higher dimensions in trade using NLP;
  • Numerical treatment of standard trade models using mixed complementarity;
  • Computable general equilibrium using NLP;

Lernziele:

  • We will move from simple utility maximization and cost minimization concepts towards different situations in canonical models of trade.
  • GAMS-wise, we will use these setups to practice both non-linear optimization (NLP) and mixed complementarity (MCP) approaches. We will learn how to put simulation output to excel and create graphs.

Students should

  • learn to translate economic ideas and models that are usually taugth with graphics and algebra into computable, solvable simulation models;
  • be able to try out ideas and scenarios in order to see the quantitative effects of changes to the economy;
  • familiarize themselves with basic GAMS tools: data input, calibration, loops, graphics and sensitivity analysis

The course will use a software package called GAMS (general algebraic modeling system). For a demo version which is downloadable for free – and large enough for anything we will be
doing –, please see the GAMS website: www.gams.com

To some degree, for the NLP part we will use: Gilbert, John; Edward Tower. Introduction to Numerical Simulation for Trade Theory and Policy. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd.,
2013.
