Inhalte:
Quantitative Text Analysis has quickly become an important part of the quantitative methods political scientists use. It can help us to understand debates in parliaments, political manifestos, discourse online and debates in the media. Meanwhile, more and more data has become available: We have access to increasingly well organized datasets of parliamentary speech as well as video and newspaper archives. Additionally, translation services and automated transcription software break down boundaries of language and data format. This allows political scientists to gain insight into political processes with an unprecented depth and scope.
This course is designed to teach students the tools required to work with text data. It will cover a sound introduction into handling text data and what promises and pitfalls lie in analyzing textual data in political science. We will then explore the most important descriptive and inferential methods that have dominated Quantitative Text Analysis in recent years.

Lernziele:
1. Understand how Quantitative Text Analysis works and how it can help us answer important questions in the social sciences.
2. Get familiar with state of the art methods in Quantitative Text Analysis, employing a widely used package in R, quanteda.
3. Understand both the promises and pitfalls of Quantitative Text Analysis and get a feeling for when and under what conditions Quantitative Text Analysis can help us answer political science questions.

Weitere Informationen zu den Prüfungsleistungen:
The examination will consist of a midterm research paper of 5 - 6 pages that is due four weeks after the last session of the course. You are free to choose any research question from political science and use any of the methods presented in the course. During the last session, we will have time to talk about your research questions and methods.

Literatur:
There is no single textbook or statistics book that is used throughout the course. For a general introduction (e.g. when deciding whether to take this course) on Quantitative Text Analysis (in German and English), I suggest:

  • Jonathan B. Slapin and Sven-Oliver Proksch. Words as Data: Content Analysis in Legislative Studies. In Shane Martin, Thomas Saalfeld, and Kaare W. Strom, editors, The Oxford Handbook of Legislative Studies , pages 126 - 144. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2014
  • Sven-Oliver Proksch. Computergestüzte Textanalysen. In Claudius Wagemann, Achim Goerres, and Markus Siewert, editors, Handbuch Methoden der Politikwissenschaft, pages 1 - 19. Springer VS, Wiesbaden, 2018

Additionally, there are readings for each session of the course, both mandatory (which will be important for understanding the content of the session) and additional readings. These will be uploaded to the respective sessions or supplied through the library.
