Inhalte:
Autonomous agents and simulation-based research have a long tradition in social science research, from diffusion research to organizational theory and media effects. With the increasing digitalization of public communication, (semi-)autonomous bots have also entered the everyday life of social media - they are no longer merely used to simulate social phenomena, but actively shape them: in online-election campaigns, on Wikipedia and on e-commerce platforms. In this seminar, we discuss conceptual foundations of various approaches to social computing, and how they are applied in communication research and practice. We will also look at the technical implementation of a software agent, and interested students can try to write a simple bot on their own.

Lernziele:
Knowledge in the basics of agent-based simulation as well as practical handling of common tools of social computing.
