Inhalte:
The European Union (EU) is in many ways a unique political organization that has changed the lives of its citizens and has fascinated political scientists with all its accomplishments and crises. The EU is based on a shared set of values, has established one of the largest markets in the world, created a powerful international currency, the Euro, enlarged its territory with multiple accessions, and has become a major actor on the international stage. Since its foundation with the Treaty of Rome in 1957, crises have challenged European integration and milestones have further deepened and enlarged the EU. In that respect, our current times are no different: the immigration crisis, Brexit, and the recent struggles of the Eurozone, including the reforms of the Economic and Monetary Union, both challenge and renew the core elements of the EU. This course serves as a foundational seminar by providing a basic overview on the polity, politics, and policies of the EU. We will examine the history of European integration, discuss EU institutions and decision making processes, and analyze the major EU policy fields.
Lernziele:
Students of this seminar will
a) study the milestones of European integration,
b) become familiar with the political system of the EU and policy-making procedures,
and c) explore some of the major policy fields of the EU,
all of which will help them developing a better analytical understanding of the current challenges of European integration.

The final exam will include questions on the course textbook and all the materials covered in the class sessions.
ACHTUNG, WICHTIGER HINWEIS: Dieser Kurs kann nur in Kombination mit dem Kurs 113081 Theorien Internationaler Beziehungen belegt werden. Beide Kurse bilden zusammen das Modul 11313 | Internationale Beziehungen das mit einer (kursübergreifenden) Modulabschlussprüfung absolviert wird. (Ausnahme: diejenigen PAIR-Studierenden, die in ihrem 3. Semester im vergangen Spring Term die betroffenen Pflichtmodule bereits mit einem Kurs angefangen haben, dürfen die Module nun mit der Wahl des anderen Kurses abschließen.)
