The Politics of Contemporary Capitalism
With globalization and digitalization, the transformation of advanced capitalist societies has shifted gears – obstinately so since the financial crisis of 2008 pp. In this seminar, we will adopt a Comparative Political Economy perspective to explore a set of questions revolving around the political and social ramifications of accelerated capitalist change. The basic assumption is that change in capitalism poses different challenges and will be absorbed differently in different societies based on variety of capitalism, political and institutional legacy, and state capacity. The questions to be explored include:
What challenges does change in capitalism present for different societies and political systems?
How do different regimes differ in their responses to these challenges?
How does capitalist transformation in the age of globalization inflect party competition and voter alignment?
And how do political-economic institutions – primarily labor market institutions and the institutions of the welfare-state – adopt to the changing structure of advanced capitalism?
