Inhalte:
Building on the mandatory seminar “Foundations of the European Union”, this course will further deepen selected topics of European politics. This seminar is thus more advanced and more specialized. Among others, we will analyze the major theories of European integration, the power balance between EU institutions and member states, political contestation and public opinion on the EU, questions of the so-called ``democratic deficit'', selected policy fields (economic and monetary policy in particular), Brexit, and the interactions between European institutions and the national level. Students will read the literature in advance to prepare themselves for the discussion of the content and implications of the reading in class. We will engage with academic articles in-depth, also by discussing the research design and quantitative methods applied in these studies.

Students of this seminar will
