Inhalte:
The seminar introduces students to curatorial practices and techniques of displaying and will provide an overview of the theory and history of displaying and exhibiting. The course aims to foster a deeper understanding of curatorial practices past and present. On the basis of theoretical texts and expert talks, we will reflect on the role of the curator; on the basis of exhibition visits, we will examine how they succeed in creating intellectually inspiring and provoking atmospheres.
In addition to this rather broad and theoretical introduction, another focus will be on curating political exhibitions in particular. This seminar is very closely aligned to the artsprogram’s annual theme “Apocalypse and World Salvation” which focuses on current end-time scenarios and narratives, possible future horizons and the aesthetics of related political movements. The White Box will host an immersive interactive space of experiences on this topic.

The seminar also includes, a one-day excursion to the high-profile art institution “Schaulager Basel” where we will take part in an art handling crash course. In Basel, we will also visit the Deana Lawson exhibition at “Kunsthalle Basel” and discover the alternative cultural project “Holzpark Klybeck”.

Please note:
The seminar is closely aligned to the practice-based part of the module. It is therefore highly recommended for ZU students to take the whole module and to choose 121182 | 241182 Curatorial Practice as well. In this part of the module, the participants will curate a program accompanying the “Apocalypse and World Salvation” exhibition. This part of the module will be held in German. For international students, it is also possible to take only the theoretical course.

The number of participants is limited to 20.

The excursion will take place on September 25th, 9.00-23.00h.

A basic knowledge of art is required.

Lernziele:
Students become familiar with the various approaches, theories, and techniques of staging and curating.

Zugelassene Hilfsmittel für die Prüfung:
The exam consists of two parts. The midterm part consists of a presentation in class. For the second part students are to write a critical exhibition review (for incoming students) or a small booklet accompanying a self-curated event which should also consider theoretical thoughts discussed in class (10 text pages max). This booklet is written and designed as a team project in groups of 4.
