Inhalte:
This course focuses on central concepts, methods and debates of contemporary comparative politics. It analyses the institutional configuration across political systems, the relations between state authorities and societies and pays special attention to the performance of political systems. Students are taught to analyze key debates in the field such as the determining factors of democratization, economic growth and ethnic/social conflicts.

Lernziele:
Students who succeeded in this course, are able to


  • to discuss the impact of institutions, economic conditions, historical developments and political culture on democratization.
  • to assess the performance of presidential and parliamentary systems.
  • to assess the performance of federal systems and unitary systems
  • to compare advantages and disadvantages of majoritarian and proportional electoral systems
  • to reflect on the evolution of political culture, political participation, party systems and voting behavior in different countries.
  • to discuss the economic, social and political reasons of ethnic wars and civil conflicts.
