Combining different theoretical perspectives with a research exercise, this class will explore what it really takes to change an organization. The following questions will be discussed over the course of the semester: How are different arts organizations responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences both in their programming and management practices? How can different theoretical perspectives help better understand the relationship between the structures and environment of an organization and its ability to change? And which suggestions does leadership literature offer to manage such change processes?
Upon completion of this class, students will write a publishable paper on changing arts organizations either in an academic journal format or in a multi-media blog / magazine format.
Structure
This class will take a distance-learning approach and be organized around synchronous face-to-face meetings on the learning platform. The students will conduct individual or group research in addition to the regular course hours. They will be asked to present the progress of their research at various times over the course of the semester. One of the classes will be dedicated to the online-event "Museum – Politics – Management" of the Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy, which revolves around the questions tackled in this class. Participation in this event is mandatory.
