Game theory is an approach based on rational choice theory which helps explain the strategic interaction of rational decision-making in the Social Sciences. Strategic interaction implies that the decision-makers make independent decisions while taking the other’s actions into consideration. The course provides an introduction to basic concepts of rational choice and game theory. We will discuss utility maximization, expected utility theory, static and dynamic games of complete information, static and dynamic games of incomplete information, and the corresponding solution concepts. The course will feature interactive elements, e.g. experiments, which help to better understand game-theoretic models. Each of the topics will be discussed using examples from political science or international relations.
Lernziele:
After successful completion of the class, you will be able to:
- understand and apply the fundamental concepts of rational choice theory
- understand and apply the fundamental concepts of expected utility theory
- understand fundamental concepts of game theory, such as Nash equilibrium
- understand and solve standard games
- apply game-theoretic arguments to political phenomena
- use games as analytical tools to understand real-world processes
