Inhalte:
WHO, UNHCR, ILO, UNEP, IMF, WTO, UNICEF: International organizations (IOs) shape global politics. Spanning a diverse array of policy areas including human rights, health, migration, climate change, finance or peacekeeping IOs are involved in the formulation, dissemination and implementation of global rules and norms. But what exactly are IOs and how can we explain their actions? Are they autonomous actors in the international system? What are sources of their influence on global dynamics? In this seminar we address these questions from diverse theoretical perspectives. We will discuss the relation between IOs and their member states as well as the inner life of IOs (What are IOs? How can we explain differences between IOs? Are IOs autonomous global authorities?), their relation to external actors (How do IOs deal with civil society? Why do they work together with NGOs and how do they create legitimacy?) as well as their interactions (How do IOs interact? What role does the political environment of IOs play?). Empirical case studies and practical examples complement these theoretical discussions.
