This seminar addresses master students or bachelor students in the terminal year only!

Worldwide the current challenge for the energy markets is moving towards a low carbon economy. In fact, we are in the middle of the energy transition and several fields of research are challenged by this: economics, finance, operations research, engineering, physics, biology or chemistry, policy and law. The core concept of the energy transition are the renewable energies and the need for their flexible integration that also requires new market designs. We witness a shift from traditional power generation technologies towards greener production sources. In addition, we deal with regulatory uncertainty affecting coal and CO2 emissions markets.

Lernziele:
Challenges posed by the energy transition should be judged from several perspectives; hence, master and bachelor (terminal year) students from all ZU disciplines are very welcome to this seminar. We will debate on the state of the art considering the interdisciplinary characteristic of the energy field and take the opportunity to come up with solutions to design meaningful future energy targets. The interdisciplinary group work will combine not only effective information about the energy markets seen from different perspectives, but will build the concept by applying a large spectrum of methods, hard to cover in individual projects, otherwise.

Modulbeschreibung:
About building group topics

The class will be split in working groups of 5/6 students from different disciplines. The supervisor will make sure that there are sufficient interdisciplinary profiles in each group. The topic will be built bottom up. The group final topic will be the result of a brainstorming process, where each student starts by proposing several keywords concerning topics of personal/academic interest, which will be motivated with the group members. The keywords should be chosen in such a way, that they allow students to use expert knowledge from their study field and at the same time reflect personal concerns and interests. During the brainstorming rounds, students will be sharing their keywords, while explaining the other group colleagues their choice. The number of keywords will be gradually reduced following the group dynamics, each student ending with one most relevant keyword which should naturally link to the other group members` choices. The title of the project will naturally emerge after further group discussion rounds. Once defined, the group title cannot be changed. The village aims at encouraging students to combine naturally academic, with social exchange.
