This PhD course attempts to introduce into sociological systems theory (or theory of social systems) to be able to talk about recent advances in organization theory. Organizations change from predominantly vertical and silo structures into predominantly horizontal and network structures. Hierarchies double. They do not only order top and bottom but also outside and inside. To understand that new "architecture of complexity" (Herbert A. Simon) we have to look at operations of social systems in general, that is, at double contingent, temporalized, and recursive communication within the medium of meaning, and of organizations in particular, that is at the communication of decisions. Communication introduces, and deals with, indeterminacy. Communication of decisions introduces, and deals with, alternatives. Organizations are those particular systems of society which are differentiated to take decisions, yet which can only do so by producing alternatives alongside their decisions. Both social systems in general and organized social systems in particular are highly restless social systems. A new management philosophy to deal with restlessness, and to explore and exploit it, is the philosophy of agile management. Here the outside of the organization is taken to dominate its inside, even if its inside is prevalent in distinguishing possible from impossible tasks. We will look at what kind of communication agile management organizations are up to and what preconditions in terms of customized production, employee culture, and information & communication technologies they are set to assume.
