Inhalte:
This course provides an introduction to cultural policy and its role in the creation, support, and sustainability of art in contemporary society. Beginning with a definition of cultural policy and its processes the course provides students with an understanding of key cultural policy issues from a historical and contemporary perspective with focus on Germany, pan-European, and US contexts. Policy issues covered include funding and subsidies, public institutions, curatorial practice, cultural diversity, and creative cities.
The in-person week will include one field trip to a local cultural institution.
Lernziele:
Course Objectives: By completion of the course, students will be able to
• Define cultural policy and articulate its importance in the creation, support, and sustainability of the arts;
• Analyze cultural policy processes for specific purposes;
• Make comparisons in policy between pan-European, German, and US contexts;
• Identify the ways cultural policies affect cultural organizations;
• Research cultural policy issues for development of a project or paper.
