Course content:
The graphical description of data and analysis results is not only helpful for the presentation of academic research, but also important for the effective communication of research to the non-academic public and to private principals and stakeholders. The statistical software R provides an excellent infrastructure for such purposes. This course discusses how it can be used to create informative and attractive graphical diagrams that can effectively employed in acedemia, applied research, and data journalism.
The following topics will be covered in the course:
- standard diagrams: scatter plots, box plots, bar charts, etc.
- file formats for graphics
- building blocks of complex diagrams
- 'ggplot' and the "Gramma of Graphics"
- interactive graphics for web applications
Educational objective:
After successful completion of the course, the participants are able to:
- choose the type of diagram fit for their particular purposes
- create the chosen diagrams in *R*
- export diagrams in the appropriate formats to integrate them in their specific context of application.
